Try These At-Home Beauty Treatments Using Common Household Items

All of us at Elements on the Plaza want to help you look and feel your best at all times. While we may not be able to welcome you into our spa right now, we do have some amazing DIY beauty treatments you can try right now, at home! All these treatments can be done with everyday items in your home or can be easily found at your favorite grocery store.

Try these four DIY beauty remedies at home to help look and feel your best:

1. DIY Hydrating Hand and Foot Treatment

This hydrating hand treatment can help heal your hands and combat dryness caused by handwashing and sanitizing.

DIY Ingredients:

  • Sugar
  • Coconut oil
  • Warm water
  • Clean socks
  • Ziplock bags

How to Hydrate Your Hands and Feet at Home

Start by mixing sugar and coconut oil together to create a scrub (don’t use too much oil, or the sugar will dissolve — the consistency should remain grainy). Scrub over your hands and feet to loosen dead, dry skin, then rinse with warm water and pat dry. Once dry, coat your hands and feet in coconut oil and place each in a ziplock bag. Then place a clean sock over the ziplock bags to lock in your natural body heat.

Let your dry hands and feet drink in the moisture for at least one hour—just enough time to enjoy your favorite TV show or watch a movie. Caution: don’t try to walk around with this treatment on your feet as it will be very slippery and you could fall!

After an hour (or more), remove the socks and bags from your hands and feet, rinse with warm water, pat dry and revel in your soft and totally renewed skin.

2. DIY Natural Nail Whitening Treatment

Since you aren’t able to get your nails done by a professional, now is the perfect time to give your nails a break from the polish and let them breathe. It’s also the perfect time to whiten and brighten your nails, removing that yellow tinge leftover from nail polish dyes.

DIY Ingredients:

  • Baking soda
  • Lemon juice
  • Toothbrush
  • Warm water
  • Coconut oil (or Vitamin E oil, almond oil, olive oil, avocado oil… etc.)
  • Nail polish remover (only if you have polished nails)

How to Whiten Your Nails Naturally

Begin your treatment with clean hands and polish-free nails. Mix baking soda and lemon juice into a thick paste. Coat your nails in this natural paste and let them sit for 10 minutes before gently scrubbing it into and under your nails with a toothbrush.

Rinse the paste off your fingernails with warm water and massage a small amount of your preferred oil into your nail beds for hydration. You’ll see results after just one treatment!

3. DIY Hydrating Nail Treatment

Washing your hands often and using hand sanitizer is more important now than ever, but it can leave your nails dry and brittle. This simple treatment will help deeply hydrate your fingernails and leave your hands feeling healthy.

DIY Ingredients:

  • Small bowl
  • Lemon juice (optional)
  • Coconut oil (or Vitamin E oil, almond oil, olive oil, avocado oil… etc.)
  • Microwave

How to Hydrate Your Nails At-Home

Place one to two inches of your preferred oil into a microwave-safe bowl and heat the liquid to warm. Make sure the oil does not get too hot or you could severely burn yourself. Once the oil is warm, but cool enough to touch, place your fingertips in the bowl and soak your nails for 10-15 minutes.

If you add a little lemon juice to the oil it can help remove stains and promote healthy nail growth. Rinse your hands in warm water to remove excess oil and reveal healthier, rehydrated nails!

4. DIY Silky Hair Treatment

Help soften dry, dull, & frizzy hair and repair split ends by doing an all-natural oil treatment at-home.

DIY Ingredients:

  • Coconut oil
  • Hair comb
  • Your shower
  • Your favorite shampoo and conditioner

How to Get Softer and Silkier Hair At-Home

This hair treatment works best on freshly-combed and dry hair. Use your comb to separate your hair into small manageable sections. Apply your coconut oil to the ends of your hair and thoroughly work it into each section. If your scalp is naturally more oily, only apply the coconut oil to the tips of your hair. If your scalp is dry, massage the oil into your scalp and down to the tips of your hair.

Let the oil sit for at least 10 minutes, or for as long as you like! Once you are ready, jump in the shower and wash your hair normally with your favorite shampoo and conditioner. Do this treatment at-home 1-2 times a week, depending on how dry or frizzy your hair is, and enjoy smoother, silkier hair.
