Fun In The Summer Sun

Summer is here, and you probably can’t wait to head to the beach or lounge by the pool. In fact, basking in the warm summer sun is a favorite pastime for most folks this time of year. What you might not realize is that nothing ages your skin faster or carries a higher risk of skin cancer than prolonged exposure to the sun – or just how important it is to make sure you include sun protection in your daily skin care regimen.

Pull out your favorite broad-brimmed hat and invest in a cute little coverup – and don’t forget to protect your eyes with UV-blocking sunglasses. But most of all, remember that sun protection products like a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a high SPF (Sun Protection Factor) are your best defense against the harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays that can cause cancer while keeping your skin looking young and healthy.

According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, UV radiation is one of the main causes of non-melanoma skin cancers which affect more than 250,000 Americans each year. While it has been reported that one in five Americans will develop skin cancer by the age of 70, you can lower your risk by following some of our simple summertime tips:

Don’t Wait Until You’re Outside to Apply SPF Sunscreen

A general rule of thumb is to apply sunscreen at least 20 minutes before you head out into the sun. Doing so will allow sunscreen to sink into the skin and provide full protection. It should be reapplied after every two hours, and immediately after swimming, for maximum protection.

We will take it one step further and urge you to incorporate sunscreen application into your daily morning routine. Starting off the day with sunscreen means you will be well protected indoors and out.

Protect Unsuspecting Areas with SPF Products

Typically, people apply sunscreen on all of the easy to reach places: arms, legs, shoulders…and some even get a helpful friend to do their back. But many people forget the little places that need it the most – places like your lips, your ears, scalp, feet and the skin that is exposed when your bathing suit rides up.

In addition, UV rays can actually penetrate some materials, especially bleached or loosely woven fabrics. For best protection, always include an SPF Protectant even if you cover up – and make sure you get all the nooks and crannies!

Make Sure Your Choose the RIGHT Sunscreen Products

Not all sunscreen products are created equal. In fact, some chemicals commonly found in sunscreens (like oxybenzone and octinoxate) are literally killing our coral reefs. This is a problem so widespread that many popular beach areas, including the State of Hawaii, are banning them completely.

Elements On the Plaza carries three incredible lines of sun protection products that are actually good for your skin – including coral-friendly ones for your tropical getaway!

Our products from Image Skincare work as daily moisturizers, offering protection and nourishment at the same time. Available in formulas ranging from SPF 30 to SPF 50, you can also choose from a matte finish or a tinted one that can actually replace your foundation for a care-free, natural summer look.

Using an SPF lip balm like Coola Suncare’s Mineral Liplux Organic Tinted Lip Balm is SPF 30 is the perfect way to nourish and soften lips while providing the protection they need. It comes in a variety of colors to enhance your look, using ingredients like mongongo oil, coconut oil, and shea butter to ensure your lips stay smooth and hydrated, and safe from sunburn. And for that all-too-exposed scalp area, don’t forget Coola’s Classic, an organic sunscreen spray. It is the perfect way to protect one of the most vulnerable parts of your body from the sun.

While we’re talking about products that protect your skin from sun damage, why not consider one that does double (or triple!) duty? One that also works as a moisturizer, makeup primer, and shine eliminator. Sorella Apothecary’s Tropical Topical is a fantastic daily moisturizer that provides SPF 30 UV protection, is an excellent makeup base, and leaves a matte, shine-free finish.

Don’t Use Last Year’s SPF Sunscreen

If you have been holding on to the same jumbo bottle of sunscreen for multiple years, it is time to let go! You might be surprised to find out that sunscreens have expiration dates. If you are using last year’s sunscreen – beware – the active ingredients lose potency over time. It is important to start fresh with a new sunscreen every summer.

Be Prepared with Travel-Size Sunscreen Products

A great way to prepare for hectic summer vacations and busy beach days is to purchase travel-size products. These smaller sizes are easy to take on-the-go in a purse or travel bag. There’s no excuse to not reapply when you have a travel-size sunscreen to take along wherever you go.

Elements on the Plaza is running a Summer Special: spend $150 on retail products and get a free summer tote*, which includes travel size samples of the 4 different Image Skincare facial SPFs!
